Milwaukee Mt. Carmel Nursing Home Has 35 Violations To Date

A JSOnline article today revealed nursing home residents at Milwaukee's Mt. Carmel Health and Rehabilitation Center has been cited numerous times for providing poor quality of care.

Investigators for the State of Wisconsin and the federal government have cited Milwaukee's Mt. Carmel Health and Rehabilitation Center a combined 35 times this year. Mt. Carmel is one of Wisconsin's largest nursing homes with 473 beds.

Some of Mt. Carmel's citations include:

  • Failing to provide appropriate supervision and assistive devices for residents who are at risk for falls.
  • Failing to assess and treat pain, depression and other problems.
  • Not treating residents "in a manner that maintained their dignity."
  • Mount Carmel was nearly closed down in 1998 when the state revoked the license of then-owner Vencor, Inc for serious and widespread health violations.

The facility was taken over by a different ownership who was credited for fixing most of the problems.

However, in January 2009 Kindred Health Care (a Vencor successor) resumed control of the facility and agreed to operate with a probationary license for one year. In January of this year, Kindred was given a full license.

According to the JS Online article and state records, citations include "actual harm" and "direct threat to health, safety and welfare." With 35 citations to date, Mt. Carmel is already close to the 40 citations received in all of 2009 and has surpassed the 25 received in 2008.
