Administrators at the Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center have ordered a halt to medical procedures because of concerns raised by an employee about sterilization procedures. Gary Kunich, the center's spokesman, said an employee raised "some concerns" about sterilization procedures on Dec. 6. "There were concerns about how we do things," Kunich said. "Strictly precautionary. We decided to be proactive. Our director said that if there is a question, put a stop to it." Kunich said at least 400 pieces of medical equipment are re-used in medical procedures, and each one of them has a different sterilization protocol. He said hospital officials were reviewing each one, but noticed no problems or concerns. "We have every indication that procedures were followed," Kunich said. "It appears we were doing everything correctly." Because of the suspension of medical procedures, approximately 14 emergency procedures had to be moved to Froedtert Hospital. The VA has an ongoing relationship with Froedtert for care, Kunich said. Kunich said he was not sure when the hospital would resume normal operations. |
